What is a compression fracture?
A compression fracture is a kind of break or fracture in your vertebrae. Vertebrae are bones in the back that form the spine. They’re stacked on top of each other. Your spine allows you to move, supports your weight, and protects your spinal cord. It also protects the nerves that move from it to other parts of your body.
Compression fractures usually cause vertebrae to collapse, making them shorter in height. This collapse can cause the bone pieces to press on the nerves and spinal cord, thus decreasing the amount of oxygen and blood that gets to the spinal cord.
What causes a compression fracture?
An injury primarily causes a fracture to the vertebra. The most familiar type of vertebral fracture is a compression fracture. A compression fracture occurs when the vertebral body of the spine is compressed or squished. This kind of injury mainly occurs in three groups of people:
