Cauda equina is a group of nerve roots communicating with your brain. Cauda equina syndrome occurs when this bundle of nerve roots becomes squeezed. As a result, you may need physical therapy, surgery, or medications.

Cauda equina is located at the lower end of your spine. It transmits nerve signals back and forth regarding the motor and sensory functions of your pelvic organs and lower limbs.

Cauda equina syndrome is a rare condition. However, in a study published in the European Spine Journal, cauda equina syndrome affects at least 1 in 33,000–100,000 people. Cauda equina syndrome regulates your control over your legs, bladder, and other body parts. If it is left untreated, it can result in severe chronic complications.

In this article, we’ll learn about the symptoms of this condition, how it is managed, and more.

Symptoms of cauda equina syndrome

The symptoms of cauda equina syndrome can take a long time to develop. The severity of the symptoms may also vary. This can make diagnosis difficult.

The legs and the bladder are usually the first areas to be affected in most cases of cauda equina syndrome.

For instance, you may struggle to hold urine or release urine. This condition is called incontinence.
