Understanding Fibromyalgia Tender Points
A Guide from the Perspective of Upper Cervical Chiropractic
Fibromyalgia is a complex condition characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, and, often, tender points throughout the body. These tender points, crucial in diagnosing fibromyalgia, can significantly impact a patient’s quality of life. Let’s delve into what fibromyalgia tender points are, their significance, and how upper cervical chiropractic care can play a role in managing them.
What are Fibromyalgia Tender Points?
Fibromyalgia tender points are specific areas of the body that are particularly sensitive to pressure. Originally identified by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), 18 designated tender points are used in diagnosing fibromyalgia. These points are typically located at nine paired sites on the body, including:
1. Occiput (base of the skull)
2. Low cervical (neck)
3. Trapezius (upper back)
4. Supraspinatus (shoulders)
5. Second rib (upper chest)
6. Lateral epicondyle (elbows)
7. Gluteal (buttocks)
8. Greater trochanter (hips)
