Many people experience various health issues without realizing that the root cause might be hiding in their upper cervical spine. Specifically, misalignment of the C1 and C2 vertebrae can lead to a wide range of symptoms that are often overlooked or misdiagnosed. In this blog post, we’ll explore the hidden symptoms of C1 and C2 vertebrae misalignment and discuss the importance of upper cervical chiropractic care in addressing these issues.

Understanding C1 and C2 Vertebrae

The C1 (atlas) and C2 (axis) vertebrae are the top two bones in your cervical spine, located at the base of your skull. These vertebrae play a crucial role in supporting your head and allowing for a wide range of motion. The C1 vertebra is responsible for about 50% of head rotation, while the C2 vertebra enables head tilting and nodding.

These vertebrae are unique in structure and function:

  • The C1 (atlas) is ring-shaped and does not have a vertebral body.
  • The C2 (axis) has a tooth-like projection called the odontoid process, which acts as a pivot for the C1 vertebra.

Due to their position and mobility, the C1 and C2 vertebrae are more susceptible to misalignment than other vertebrae in the spine.
