Burning Mouth Syndrome and Foundational Correction
Burning mouth syndrome abbreviated BMS is a condition that causes a burning sensation in your mouth.
The burning feeling can develop without warning, and you may feel it anywhere in your mouth. However, it is mainly supposed on the tongue, roof of your mouth, or the lips. Burning mouth syndrome can become chronic or may occur periodically (1).
It is essential to understand what causes BMS and the treatment options that are available for it. According to the American Academy of Oral Medicine (AAOM), burning mouth syndrome affects at least two percent of the population. The prevalence is potentially higher in women than in men.
What are the symptoms of burning mouth syndrome?
The symptoms of burning mouth syndrome may be mild or severe and vary from person to person. Some patients compare the feeling to the burning sensation of hot food. To others, it feels like scalding. In addition, burning mouth syndrome may cause slight numbness or tingle in less severe cases (2).
Symptoms of burning the mouth can last a long time. In addition, dealing with constant pain can make it challenging to take in food. However, some people may feel relieved after drinking and eating (3).
