Nearly everyone has woken up in the middle of the night at some point in their life. For most people, the cause is benign and short-lived, like wanting to pee due to the intake of many fluids before bed.

But then, regularly getting up from bed in the middle of the night can become a bit of a problem, as it interrupts sleep.

Sleep is an essential function that restores the body. Depriving yourself of sleep can cause significant health disorders and impair cognitive function.

In this article, I’ll share some common reasons why a person may keep waking up in the middle of the night.

1. High blood sugar

Being diabetic or prediabetic is a risk factor for waking up in the middle of the night. A diabetic person has high blood sugar levels and peeing more than usual (especially at night). This is so because water attaches itself to the glucose in the body. So, fixing your blood sugar issue might help you not often pee at night.

2. Sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a well-known cause (1) of waking at night. Sleep apnea causes shallow breathing, which causes a person to wake several times at night. In most cases, the affected individual may not even know that their sleep is disrupted.
